Identifying signs of fertility - what you need to know about your body..

Cervical fluids-

By looking at the quality and quantity of your cervical fluid you will be able to easily identify the time of the menstrual cycle when fertility and conception is possible.

During the fertile time of the month estrogen (yin moistening qualities) will peak, roughly about 6 days before ovulation, and the environment of the vagina changers. It will become more alkaline and slippery and you may notice more mucus than usual, it becomes clear and stretchy, often likened to egg-white consistency. To a TCM doctor reflects the state of the Yin within the body. Yin is important for the ripening of mature and fertile eggs as well as establishing and nourishing the uterine lining for implantation.

This is often the first sign that you will likely notice indicating that it is the fertile time of the month. Fertile fluids allow for sperm to be able to enter the uterus and survive in the woman’s ordinarily acidic body.

The changers in fertile mucus indicates that the body is ready to receive the sperm and creates a protective and favorable environment allowing sperm to survive up to 3 days, however, the average lifespan of 16- 18 hours.

In cases where there is low sperm motility or low numbers Chinese herbal treatments with an emphasis in establishing quality and quantity of cervical mucus can maximize survival of sperm and encourages entry to the uterus.

At other times of the cycle at the beginning and end of the cycle the body is not fertile, low levels of estrogen (low moistening yin qualities) results in scant or tacky mucus which is opaque and contains cellular matter. This type of environment is acidic, protective and destroys and blocks the sperm from entering.

* if your discharge is constant and does not go through a cycle of change, has an offensive smell or causes irritation, itching or burning than it may be due to an infection.

Other conditions that affect mucus conditions:

· Drugs and medications- a myriad of drugs can affect this if they interfere with hormone levels, and mucus membranes. Example are some sedatives, anti-depressants, anti-inflammatory medications, anti- spasmodic, antibiotics, anti-histamines, cold and flu medicines. Hormonal or fertility drugs.
· Nutrient deficiencies- Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and vitamin A are required for fertile mucus
· Thyroid problems- may interfere with ovulation
· Stress- can inhibit or delay ovulation
· PCOS
